Griller's Manual guideThe single layer, your grill's size and the type of cook matter more than the scales. Practical references so you never run out of embers — or burn money into ash.
More important than grams per person is the ember area: to grill well you need an even layer of charcoal under the cooking zone, about two fingers deep. Your grill's size sets the amount — not the exact guest count.
Charcoal with high fixed carbon and minimal moisture packs more energy per kilo: fewer lightings, longer-held temperature, and at the end you can close the vents and reuse whatever didn't burn next time. Do the maths by the month, not by the bag.
It depends more on the grill and duration than on the people: for a cook of up to 1 hour on a medium grill, a single layer of charcoal (about two fingers deep) is the starting point. High density = fewer top-ups.
Yes: close the lid and vents at the end; the embers die from lack of oxygen and the unburnt charcoal relights next time with two firelighters.
It ruins the budget and can overheat the grill. Better a well-spread single layer, topped up halfway through longer sessions.
