How to light charcoal without lighter fluid (or stress)

The pyramid method in 4 steps: 2 firelighters, airflow and 15–20 minutes of patience. No alcohol, no petrol, no strange flavours.

The pyramid method, step by step

  1. Place 2 firelighters in the centre of the grill — natural ones (wood wool, for example), never flammable liquids.
  2. Build the charcoal into a pyramid over the firelighters, with gaps for air to flow. Fire climbs; the pyramid uses that.
  3. Light the firelighters and step away. No fanning, poking or rearranging for the first 15 minutes — fiddle a lot, grill late.
  4. Spread the coals when the embers are ready: grey outside, glowing orange inside, no flame at all. With EKOOLOGY charcoal that takes 15–20 minutes.

Why never use alcohol or petrol

Beyond the real danger of uncontrollable flare-ups, flammable liquids soak into the charcoal and pass a fuel taste to the food. If your charcoal needs chemical «help» to catch, the problem is the charcoal — a dense, dry charcoal like slow-pyrolysis acacia lights with two firelighters and asks for nothing more.

Flame is not embers

The most common barbecue mistake: food on the grill while there is still flame. Flame burns the outside and leaves the inside raw. Grilling is done over embers — stable heat, no flames. The wait is worth gold.

Frequently asked questions

How long does charcoal take to be ready?

With acacia biocharcoal, 15–20 minutes from lighting to ready embers (grey outside, orange inside, no flame). Damp or low-density charcoals can take much longer.

Can I use alcohol to light charcoal?

We never recommend it: it is dangerous and leaves a fuel taste in the food. Two natural firelighters and a well-built pyramid solve everything.

How do I know the embers are ready?

When the charcoal is covered in light ash outside and glowing orange inside, with no flame left. If there are still flames, it's not time yet.
